How to train your Pug or Puggle

Pug Training

Pug puppies, like all pure-bred Puppies, have natural traits. Pugs are usually bred to keep these characteristics consistent. The pug puppy would develop these traits naturally without being taught. Being informed is your first step to knowing how to use these characteristics to your advantage. Since your pug believes he is the center of the earth, your reaction to a completed command needs to be very expressive and requires praise equivalent to winning a national championship. The steps below explain how to teach your puppy the command, “Sit,” but the techniques can be used to teach him any command.

  • Select a word or phrase that you would use to praise your Pug. Use the same word or phrase, for any command that you are training him. Keep it simple and short but including his name would have greater effect. For e.g.; “Good work, Troy!”
  • After your puppy has eaten, sit on the floor with him in a cool and quiet surrounding. There should be no other animals, children, television or other distracting things around.
  • You should be able to get his attention, since even pug puppies hang onto every expression. Put one hand under his chin, and the other gently on his backside. Say his name, pause as he looks at you, and then say in a firm but pleasant tone, “Sit.”
  • With one hand keeping his attention toward you, lightly lower his back side. Do not press down hard, as this can damage his hips. His sit may consist of crouching, but that’s OK for now.
  • Once the dog is seated, however so slightly, use the phrase you had selected for appreciation. Here you need to put a lot of energy into it. Then give him at least 20 seconds of praise by repeating the phrase and make it a big party. Lift him up, hug him, rub his head, or have him roll over and rub his belly. Whatever he likes. You will need to go over the top every time he obeys. Since your pug already assumes he is a good dog, and you adore him, you must be very excited about his accomplishment to show him how much more you adore him now that he has learned a trick.
  • Keep up with just one command for at least seven days. Although you may be tempted to go move onto something new, stay with just one at a time. The connection between his action and the adoration needs to be solidified.
  • Every seven to 10 days, you can add other simple commands to his repertoire. You’ll need to continue to practicing the ones he’s learned, and continue to give him lots of praise. Remember, “It’s Party Time!” each time he is successful. If his attention span is short, this is a sign of immaturity. He can still learn, but you will need to teach him in shorter, separate intervals each day, rather than all in one sitting twice a day.
  • At the end of each session, give him a brief brushing all over. This will stimulate his skin like a massage. It will also keep him from shedding as much, a trait typical for pugs. Use the damp paper towel to wipe down and collect the hair off the floor and the brush.

The Different Methods Of Dog Training

In the above video noted veterinarian and dog trainer Dr. Ian Dunbar offers a few of the “million different ways” to train a dog, outlining three simple strategies for dog owners.

There are so many concepts and ways of training your dog. Dog training for some are categorized into types of training that they used. For puppies dog crate training can be a challenge. Training your pet dogs to sleep on an air filled dog bed is also a challenge. Transport dog crates are very convenient use but you also need to train your pet dogs.

For most people who train their pet animals they will use the reward system. Whereby their pets are basically being bribe to do something in exchange for a toy or food. This system is not bad but there are drawbacks. This system is widely used by the popular pet name companies because it is politically correct.

When using these way of training your pet dogs tend not to listen especially if rewards being offered is not worth. Sometimes the task that is being ask of them is not worth for their effort. The results will be that these dogs will be dominant, anti social and pushy at times. The sad part is that some of these will end up in animal shelters.

The opposite of these types of trainers are those that force and intimidate their pet dogs to do what they want. It is the old school type training. It is understood that people who trained their pet animals this way are known to be under pressure for time. In short time is money. These method can be done in a short period of time. The problem with these method is that the dogs will seldom like their handlers or trainers. so end up with a dog that when ask to do something will just tuck his tail or lay to the ground and do not want to do anything.

Now that you have two contrasting ways of training, you can decide for yourself what to do. Before you start on the training process, you have to understand that dogs are a pack of animals and will follow their pack leader. So need their respect in order to have control and consistency in their training.

The best way or system of training your pet dogs is to incorporate these two contrasting methods of training.

There has to be a time where you can reward them and have to use some distraction methods or some sort of punishment if they disobey you. In other words you have to balance between giving them rewards for good behavior and punishment for disobedient. It will not be easy but if you can do that you are giving yourself and your dog a favor.

To be respected by your dog you have to gain their respect and maintain leadership role with your pet dogs. Whether you are training them on an air filled dog bed, dog crate training or a transport dog crates you have to maintain your leadership role as a pack leader.
