Pets are really expressive and dogs and cats are amongst the most expressive pets. They cannot communicate vocally but through their facial expressions they convey a million things. Shar-Pei – An Exclusive Breed Of Dogs

If you come across a large dog with deep wrinkles and blue-black tongue then it’s none other than the Shar-Pei breed of dog. This breed originates from China, hence is also known as the Chinese Shar-Pei. There, these dogs were used to help the farmers in herding cattle and guarding the home and the family of their master. This breed of dogs was once called as one of the world’s rarest breeds by the Time magazine and the Guinness Book of World Records.

As already mentioned, the loose fold of skin on their bodies commonly called wrinkles make them easy to be recognized. These wrinkles disappear as the dog matures. This is because they grow into their skin. Along with it they always have the ‘frowning’ expression. Shar-Pei is short and squarely built but looks strong due to their good bones. They move freely and vigorously.

Their coat is one of their unique features, as it is short and bristly and is harsh to touch. The coat is straight and stand-offish on the body and is flatter on the limbs. Their height is between 18 to 20 inches and weight is 40 to 55 pounds.  The feeding requirements of these dogs make them an expensive deal. The food used should be of a good quality but with low level of protein. After the age of 6 months, the dogs need to be fed adult food. Just like most other breeds the usual life span of these dogs is from 9 to 15 years.

The temperament of Shar-Pei is very friendly and family oriented. They are very loyal to their masters and are intelligent, playful, active and brave but dominant. Due to their friendly temperament they are even friendly towards cats and children. The Chinese Shar-Pei is easy going, quiet, independent and dedicated. All these qualities make them a wonderful companion to have and also a good watchdog. Since they have a dominant nature, they need to be handled with a confident and strong person. Otherwise they will take over as the boss and will become stubborn and bold. Hence it is always required to give them firm obedience training so that the master establishes his or her leadership.

The Shar-Pei are prone to kidney failure which causes a fever and swollen hocks syndrome. There is a misconception about these dogs, that due to their wrinkles they have skin problems. Yes some of them have skin problem, but this is heredity and not at all because the wrinkles. To avoid this problem its better to buy from a reputed breeder who strives for healthy dogs.

Shar-Pei has also earned fame due to their various appearances in TV shows. Like the character of Bpo Bpo in the Television show Lost, as Popeye in Hong Kong TVB comedy shows and Molly with its master Zac Lichman from Big Brother. Along with all these shows and many more, Shar-Pei has also made an appearance in few advertisements, such as the Garnier anti-wrinkle cream.
